DC motors – proven technology and several options
The technology of DC motors still has its rightful place in many industrial applications.
Direct current technology is still a high-quality alternative to alternating current technology because it is easy to control, compact and extremely reliable. In addition, direct current motors are particularly user-friendly and are impressive with their good start-up performance and adjustability. That is why, along with three-phase asynchronous cage motors, they have been on our production line and shipped worldwide since 1927.
Direct current motors are used where variable speed operation is necessary. They provide constant torque, both at low and high speeds. A compact and modular design enables our DC motors to be used, even in difficult installation conditions. There are therefore practically no limits to its use.
A focus of our work is to adjust individual drives to customer requirements. For example, MENZEL can construct designs which are identical to old ones, or in the event of failure, can delivery new products directly from the warehouse. Many of our DC motors are readily available in stock, so that you will be able to continue to run your plants without significant downtime. We can make any necessary adjustments quickly and flexibly at our site in Berlin.
With our direct current motors, we also offer a vast range of appropriate construction and monitoring devices, e.g. tachometer generators and pulse generators.

Direct current motor manufacturers since 1927
MENZEL direct current motors have a long tradition. MENZEL has been a manufacturer and supplier or DC motors since 1927. We export worldwide. Our decades of experience and our market knowledge therefore make us a reliable partner.
We are continuously improving our range for you. For example, in the field of direct current motors, we have developed the modular MEBGVF series, which guarantees the fast and flexible provision of our motors. MENZEL DC motors can therefore be used as an exchangeable reserve at any time, without having to make costly adjustments to foundations, cables or connections.
As manufacturers, we strive to meet the highest quality standards in terms of production, processing and technical advice. MENZEL Elektromotoren is DIN ISO 9001 certified.
MENZEL MEBGVF series direct current motors
MENZEL MEBGVF series direct current motors have a modular structure. They enable us to provide basic motors quickly and reliably, in a wide range of construction types, and with virtually any combination of terminal box and fan positions. Because they comply with the IEC Standards, DC motors in this series can, in many cases, replace motors produced by other manufacturers in the short-term.
As with all electric motors made by MENZEL, our direct current motors undergo strict quality and safety controls, in order to guarantee trouble-free installation. All direct current motors are comprehensively tested in our on-site motor test area before delivery.
Specifications of the MEBGVF direct current motor series
The production of our MEBGVF 100 series involves a 2-pole design; that of the MEBGVF 112 to MEBGVF 315 series involves a 4-pole design.
Up to frame size 315, our MEBGVF direct current motors belong in protection class IP 23 are of cooling type IC 06. However, the modular structure enables the protection class or cooling type to be adjusted at any time. For difficult environmental conditions, these fully closed IP 55 motors can be designed as, or converted to, IC 666 or water-cooled IC 86W.
MENZEL direct current motors have a fully laminated design. High-quality insulation and waterproofing protect them against damp, humid climates and aggressive industrial environments. This ensures the durability of our direct current drives, as well as the use of first-class materials. Special insulation systems are also available for particularly high demands.
Direct current motors from series MEBGVF 100 to MEBGVF 250 are available in construction type B35 (IM 2001) or B3 (IM 1001) with a flange adapter ring. Series MEBGVF 280 to MEBGVF 315 are available in construction type B3 (IM 1001). Certain customer-specific adjustments can be made to the flange bearing end shields or flange adapter rings of our DC motors. Construction types or mounting positions which deviate from those mentioned above are possible on request at any time.
The terminal boxes are usually located on the right-hand side of DC motors in the MEBGVF series with frame sizes between 112 and 315. If the frame size is 100, the terminal boxes are at the top. The position of the terminal box can be changed in no time.
As a rule, our modular direct current motors belong in protection class IP 23 and are of cooling type IC 06 In this motor cooling type, cool air is sucked in through radial forced ventilation on the NDE. The air is discharged through air outlets on the DE. The air intake opening is covered with a protective grille. The cool air flows from the BS (BS = commutator side) to the AS (AS = drive side).
Deviating direct current motor cooling types or protection classes can be created without problems. If a cooling air system is available¬ at the installation site, the DC motors can be designed with pipe connection nozzles on the AS and BS, allowing a connection to the cooling air system (protection class IP 44, cooling type IC 37).
Forced ventilation with a pipe connection for the intake of air on the BS side and free exit into the environment on the AS side is also possible (protection class IP 23, cooling type IC 17). Forced ventilation with a pipe connection for the intake of air on the AS side and free exit into the environment on the BS side is also possible (protection class IP 23, cooling type IC 27).
Other possibilities arise through the construction of an air-water heat exchanger (IC 86W) or the construction of an air-air heat exchanger (IC 666).
Forced cooling fans and filter systems The forced cooling fan is attached to the NDE side of the DC motor in our MEBGVF series. Corresponding openings in the end shield on the NDE side also provide lateral mounting options for the forced cooling fan.
In suction filter systems, depending on the series, the metal filter cartridge or filter fleece variations are used.
Thermal monitoring is a key issue for direct current motors in industrial use. The integrated filters can clog up quickly as a result of function-related contamination. The result: the direct current motor can overheat quickly. By installing a differential pressure monitor in¬to the fan unit and/or by installing PTC thermistors into the pole windings, the operator can be warned of overheating in a timely manner.
Our direct current motors are fitted with PTC thermistor elements and thermal contacts with an NC function. If necessary, our service department can install additional thermal sensors (e.g. PT 100 elements).
MENZEL offers a wide range of different protective equipment for the thermal monitoring of our direct current motors.
By default, the attachment device for recording speed measurements is intended for systems with a B10/European flange system. On request, we can retrofit corresponding direct current tachometer generators or rotary pulse generators from our warehouse. Modification using customer-specific systems is also possible after consultation.
